DAVID<\/strong><\/p>\n Have you ever had a sudden realization\u2026 Oh my god, I forgot to get married!\u00a0 Or, oh my god, I forgot to have kids!<\/p>\n It\u2019s not just a women thing.\u00a0 Guys have it too.<\/p>\n I know I can have kids well into my sixties. And, in our society, it\u2019s a lot easier or \u201cmore acceptable\u201d for an older man with a younger woman. Usually because an older man has money and the woman just wants to be taken care of. Oh, don\u2019t look at me like that\u2026 I didn\u2019t make the rules.<\/p>\n But, there are guys like me who don\u2019t have a lot of money. And, here I am, well into my fifties, I\u2019m pretty set in my ways. (pause) I\u2019m not gay. I just like doing what I want when I want. Probably the one thing that separates me from my other straight and married friends is that I\u2019ve always enjoyed my own company. I paint, I surf, I read a lot\u2026 I can cook. I don\u2019t mind cleaning. And, I like decorating. I like making things. NO! I\u2019m not gay.<\/p>\n You know, I really kinda resent that so many people not only think that but will actually ask me\u2026 what the fuck?! Guys can\u2019t like finding a great recipe or making something beautiful out of a piece of driftwood? \u201cYou\u2019ve never married? Hmmmmmm.\u201d I hate how they judge me. I hate when anyone judges people.\u00a0 And, I hate when people live their lives according to someone else\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n I love my life. I love my freedom. If I want to wear the same clothes for three days, I can. If I want to leave a mess in my living room for a month, I can. If I want to smoke a cigar and watch the stars on my deck, I can. \u00a0OK, maybe the last one sounded a little gay.<\/p>\n I never understood the nine-to-five, let\u2019s climb to the top kind of mentality. I\u2019m not very good with numbers and math, so there went my financial career. I like to build and fix things, but I\u2019m not good doing it on your time and your style if I don\u2019t agree with it. I like teaching surfing. Surfing is my zen\u2026 my religion. You must be present and completely mindful. And when you ride your first wave it\u2019s better than losing your virginity. And pretty much any great or even good wave after that is like losing your virginity over and over again\u2026 that\u2019s fucking awesome!<\/p>\n I get it. I\u2019ve had relationships that have been beautiful. It\u2019s really special having someone take care of you when you\u2019re sick. \u00a0I know how nice it is to wake up with someone on a Sunday and spend a lazy morning in bed together \u2013 talking\u2026 drinking coffee\u2026 sex. It\u2019s incredible.<\/p>\n But that initial feel good feeling leaves. Some people are able to evolve into something else. But most people just get tired or angry trying to relive the magic of the beginning. They fall into a routine\u2026 they co-exist without trying to upset the norm\u2026 they proceed as \u201cexpected\u201d and think<\/em> they are doing the right thing. That\u2019s not living\u2026 at least not to me.<\/p>\n So maybe I forgot to get married and maybe I forgot to have kids\u2026 but I wouldn\u2019t trade my life for anyone else\u2019s. I live life on my terms. Every day is a gift and a challenge that I gratefully accept. I\u2019m not opposed to getting married. I\u2019ve just never met a woman who didn\u2019t want to change me. I\u2019ve never met a woman who is fully responsible for her own happiness.
